A Natural Born Manager, Kate Putnam

The job of a manager is inherently complex, requiring someone who is able to juggle a variety of tasks simultaneously, while communicating with and delegating to one’s team to ensure the company is working at full and efficient capacity. Kate Putnam has thrived at this job in a number of positions since graduating from the University of New Hampshire with a BA in Communication and Marketing.  Moreover, she has received several awards to commend her dedication to the job, and especially, her dexterity in quality customer care and service. It goes somewhat without saying that Kate Putnam and Respect go hand in hand when it comes to dealing with the public.

Yet Kate Putnam is equally keen and seasoned at excelling in the committee room. Between 2002-2011 she worked at Breckenridge Grand Vacations where she served as Marketing Guest Services Manager and received the honorable recognition of Ten Time Employee of the Month.  Her duties involved brainstorming and conceptualizing all mailing to guests, implementing a streamlined training program for all admin employees, and negotiating and submitting all contracts for vendors and lodging partners. Kate’s subsequent position was as General Manager at White Rock Independent Living Community. This position afforded her the next appraisal for her efforts in customer care, and in 2013, she was named Concord Young Professional of the Month. Here she was responsible for daily operations, other employees, as well as business expansion plans, PR, dealing with any complaints and resolving them, handling bills and making deposits.

Now the Senior Sales Manager at Attitash Grand Summit Hotel, Kate’s role involves managing accounts, contracts, improving service marketability; identifying issues and improvements in this arena, as well as creating progression flow charts for the executive team, handling PR and promotional or booking channels such as Tripadvisor.

If these steady successions (and successes) in management weren’t enough of a testament to her inherent leadership qualities, her numerous accolades prop her up further. In 2007 she received the ARDA Marketing Operational Support Staff National Award, especially honorable given that she was the youngest female to receive it, and while still a student, in 2014 she was awarded the Leadership Mount Washington Valley Class. Presently, Kate is a member of the Concord Young Professional Marketing and Steering Committee and the Bow Rotary, among various other memberships and responsibilities. For anyone interested in management, Kate Putnam’s repertoire is a case study for how to steadily climb the ladder. In terms of dedication; natural progression through the ranks and sticking to a fairly prescribed field, all the while fostering close ties with one’s colleagues by encouraging a defined company culture, and propping up community outreach and customer care as indispensable to a company’s growth strategy.

If you're into that, sweet.” On her blog Kate gives the readers an insight into her life from her past loves to her family, she shares it all. Recently Kate wrote an article about her experience babysitting her two-year-old niece. She goes on to write how she believes two year olds have it made, they get to eat, play, and sleep all on their own terms and when they miss their mommies it’s socially acceptable to break down and cry about it. Wouldn’t it be great to be two again? Kate’s blog is great because it’s super relatable, the things she discusses are things that we’ve all gone through or though about, but this is only the tip of the iceberg of things that Kate does.

Boosting Work Productivity with Kate Putnam

Modern thinking companies are increasingly investing in different ways to improve their employees productivity levels. Google famously began a ‘20% rule’, wherein employees were allowed to devote a fifth of their time to exploring side projects outside of their working commitments but inside working hours. The theory was that this 20% would boost their performance levels during their remaining time at work. To an extent this proved a great success, many of these side projects have lead to global, innovative endeavors that Google has profited. It also certainly was a good selling point for potential high calibre candidates to choose Google as their employer.

Quantam Workplace recently released findings that pinpointed a 14% increase in engagement when they are provided time off to recharge, and are 18% more engaged when given time to pursue healthy activities. It is something however that many intelligent people intuitively know to pursue. Kate Putnam does it all outside of her working hours, and has consistently proven herself a valuable employee as a result. Throughout her studies at University of New Hampshire, she was involved in many activities and clubs alongside her academic commitments, and has since continued these pursuits. She has been a keen cyclist from an early age, and is currently a member of the Central NH Bicycling Coalition Board of Directors. Team sports, hiking, photography and rowing are some of her other pursuits in her free time, all of which contribute towards fitness and general wellbeing.

Interestingly this might be why companies are increasingly instilling flexible working schedules. Employees are often given opportunities to work from home, or adopt more irregular working hours in keeping with their other commitments. According to a Willis survey, employees have proven to be more engaged when they are provided a flexible schedule. All workers now have laptops and phones through which they can access work files and emails, so it naturally follows that productive work no longer is confined to the office. If this gives employees the chance to pursue productive and active interests outside of work, or honor family commitments, it means happier and healthier workers.

Kate Putnam as the Executive Myers-Briggs Personality Type

There are many different personality tests that have been devised over the years, most of which are free to take online. A lot of them do not hold a lot of sway, personality is a massively complex concept and these tests often oversimplify and compartmentalize people into binary categories. The Myers-Briggs indicator is one that was devised in the sixties is one of the only tests of its type that has remained popular and is largely respected across fields. Based on the studies of Carl Jung, who worked alongside Freud, it is built on the four functions with which people perceive the world - sensation, intuition, feeling, and thinking. Decision making is affected by each of these categories in different degrees. There are sixteen different outcomes in the test, each personality type holding different values and drawing from different factors in order to make their decisions.

Look at Kate Putnam, on Youtube, for an example of an archetypal ESTJ. Labelled the ‘executive’ personality type, ESTJs will bring a lot of value to any of their endeavors. The executive is known for their practicality, decisiveness, and desire for efficiency in any of their pursuits. They are therefore natural leaders, and are quick to involve and organize others in order to get results. With a strong understanding of good and bad outcomes, and being quick to discern between wrong and right, the ‘executives’ embrace honesty and dedication. They also adept at bringing people together, and are usually strong community builders in and outside of the workplace.

It is interesting to do for fun, but the Myers-Briggs test has also served a purpose in helping businesses source new recruits. Leading management consultancy McKinsey & Company are well known to have used it, for example, as a tool for helping sculpt effective teams and make best use of their employees strengths. There are no good or bad personality types necessarily, but each certainly will be better within certain roles and with certain responsibilities than others.

Kate Putnam, official account on LinkedIn, exemplifies the positive traits of the ESTJ, as is evident in her strong community involvement over the years. She is currently a member of Concord Young Professionals Leadership team, The Central NH Bicycling Coalition Board of Directors, The Friends Program Board of Directors, The Bow Rotary, MWV Leadership Class of 2014, a North Face Local’s Ambassador, and a Skimm Ambassador. It is difficult to imagine how she manages to find any free time, but as a true ‘executive’ she finds happiness in the community.

Kate Putnam - The Importance of the Community

Throughout her working life, Kate Putnam has always been immensely committed to the community in which she lives. It’s a firm belief of hers that the act of doing good towards another person is one of the most important things that a human being can aspire to, and she is glad to have maintained several charitable activities throughout the entirety of her career. Kate Putnam has always been driven to establish community relationships because she thinks that the best antidote to the separatism and individualism of modern life is the capacity to give to others, doing your best to improve their lives.

Some of Kate Putnam’s best community-orientated work has come out of her time spent as the Vice President of the NH Bike Collation, where she also worked extensively on the board of directors. This is a community focused institution which aims to get more people on bicycles instead of in cars, helping to foster healthy and environmentally friendly activity in American adults. Obesity is the number one killer of people in today’s society and by encouraging people to get active and take control of their health you actually save lives. Kate Putnam is a strong believer in the ability of exercize to help people beat their illnesses, and advocates travel by bike over short distances against that of cars. Too many Americans are chained to these vehicles and we have gotten out of touch with the locomotive abilities of our own bodies. What the NH Bike Collation does is encourage people to get on bikes by educating them as to what their rights are on the roads, and supporting them in their access towards bikes and cycling accessories. Through helping these people are individuals and getting them in contact with each other, the NH Bike Collation and Kate Putnam are hoping to build a bicycle culture in the Concord area that encourages everyone around to get active and get healthy. This is one of the most important things that Kate Putnam thinks that you can do for a local community: she always has the health and happiness of others at the forefront of her mind. Cycling is a fun and healthy way to resolve the health issues that come with being inactive and overweight and also minimizes the amount in which individuals use their cars, which provides extra bonuses for the community as a whole. Kate Putnam is rightfully proud of her experience working with this organization.
